Jacob Just Juiced it Jesterday

OK, it hasn't been the best season for the Mets. Granted, it hasn't been the worst, even in this century. There were times when I was proud to wear my Mets regalia and there were other times I was ready to hide, like the New Orleans "Ain'ts" a bunch of years back. Most often, during the dark days of May, June and the beginning of July, after which the "Powers that be" decided it was time for a self-fulfilling prophesy, calling the Mets "out of it" and not even trying to reorganize the team for a possible run at the rather lackluster Braves (if they had been in the NL Central, AL West or AL East with their current record, this far into the season, they'd be in 3rd place). All the Mets would have needed in 2-2 1/2 months of the season would have been to have had a good winning streak (which they usually experience every year but didn't have a good streak this years since April) and that 15 games behind might have evaporated. Granted, Sandy sort of left suddenly (I understand why he did -- I'm not placing the blame on him) and it left the team without a front office leader (in a season that we kept hearing that our on-field leader would be back soon). It's so much easier to write off the season than it is to try.

But this post is or at least should be about Jacob DeGrom, the Anti-Samson (seems, KI"H, that he got stronger without his hair). His season has been amazing (though, at times during the season, one didn't realize it) and last night, the only things missing out of his performance were a no-hitter and a complete game. The team gave him a bit of run support, more than most of the games he's started.

Despite his huge lead in the ERA department, an historically low ERA with an historically low winning percentage, a season where he delivered his 1,000th strikeout (last night on his final batter in the top of the 8th) and a new record in consecutive games with quality starts and consecutive games pitching more than 6 innings giving up fewer than 3 runs per game.

It's a real shame he didn't get more wins, but, these days, with pitchers rarely finishing games and often leaving games ahead (or tied) only to have the bullpen meltdown, I suspect this might happen again.

All the Mets announcers think it's a foregone conclusion that Jake will win the Cy Young award. That would be nice (and VERY well deserved) but these awards are not necessarily given to the person who most deserves it and there is no specific mathematical formula, no guarantees. I hope he does get the Cy Young award, but if he doesn't, it doesn't take away from what he did this season.
