Lionizing the Braves

ב"ה

I know the Mets are doing well right now and I shouldn't despair. I know they have acquitted themselves well, despite how badly they are doing against the Braves (only winning one of the past 5 games against them).

But (and this is a BIG but) I am getting very sick of hearing the announcers talk about how wonderful the players on the other teams are. It's one thing to mention a stat or two, but tonight, during a fiasco of a game against the Braves, the announcers kept going on and on about new Brave catcher Francisco Cervelli and long-time Mets killer Freddie Freeman. With the Mets having had a major "dive" after two straight running mistakes not only removed them from a chance to go ahead in a 5-5 game, it was the momentum turner, after which the Braves came up and promptly scored two runs (the second run was scored because usually baseball savvy JD Davis made a mental error by holding the ball instead of throwing into the infield) and then another 2 runs scored before the Mets came up in the bottom of the 9th. I kept hearing all these laudatory statements about how wonderful all the Braves were playing.

Now, I have to tell you, my father told me that the reason he wasn't a Red Sox fan (he grew up in New Hampshire) was that in those days (the 40s, I believe) the Red Sox had an announcer who didn't talk about the other teams' players. Keep in mind, this was an era without regular TV coverage of baseball games (on Radio coverage, so no pictures). So it made sense that this was an annoying trait, but it's more annoying to lionize the other teams' players.

This was not the first time I've had this complaint, but tonight they went below and beyond. Having something to talk about is not an excuse to act as though they are forgetting who their audience is. They aren't on the network where they probably have a similar number of viewers rooting for each team (and another bunch who aren't rooting in particular). But this was the Met announcers -- They should not only not be sounding like they are rooting for the opposing team, they should be sounding partisan, like they are rooting along with us and just as upset as we are when our team is playing like the Bad News Bears. Yes, we can see what's going on, we don't need you guys to remind us (unless you are commiserating with us).

I love you, Keith, Ronny and Gary, but PLEASE, at least sound disappointed when the Mets aren't winning, at least remind us of the recent winning streaks, at least remind us that the Braves aren't the only teams on our dance cards. But, please, don't tell us how wonderful the Braves are.... (or the Nats or the Phils or even the Yanks).
